What to expect when your Roommate moves out

May 10, 2021

If your roommate is moving out, here is what to expect and do:

  • For those of you who's current roommate is moving out, someone will first visit your apartment within 10 days of their move out.
  • After the initial visit, Facilities will prepare the vacant room and bathroom for a new occupant.  Several Facilities crews will enter your apartment for a few hours at a time between 9AM and 6PM over a couple of weeks.  These crews include your maintenance crew, the painting crew, the cleaning crew, the carpet cleaning crew, and pest control. Please be advised that should other specific repairs be needed in your apartment, including HVAC or carpentry, other Facilities personnel may also enter your apartment during this time.
  • NOTE:  If you are not moving out of your apartment, you will need to ensure that the common areas are clean before a new roommate moves in.  Please make sure the other person has an equal share of cabinet space, room in the fridge, and if they share the restroom, that it is clean and space made available for their toiletries.
  • Also, please be aware that it is likely a new roommate has already been assigned to move into your apartment. We suggest regularly checking your myhousing portal at myhousing.unc.edu for information regarding the other bedroom in your apartment.

Take care and stay well everyone!
